St. John’s, Antigua – Police say they discovered $30,000 worth of cannabis at the General Post Office, just a day after the building was broken into and rummaged.

According to the Strategic Communications Unit (STRATCOM), a routine search conducted by Customs and police officers uncovered five vacuum-sealed packages of the controlled substance inside a cardboard box. The packages weighed a total of five pounds and were seized for further investigation.

STRATCOM did not comment on whether the discovery of the drugs was linked to the recent break-in.

The General Post Office was closed to the public on Monday following a burglary that caused significant damage to several offices. Postmaster General Algernon Gomes reported that the intruders gained entry by breaking a glass pane near the customer service entrance. Once inside, they ransacked drawers, kicked in doors, and attempted—but failed—to break into the strong room.

The perpetrators also forced their way into several offices on the first floor, including the Accounts department. Gomes confirmed that while desks and registers were rummaged through, no items of significant value were immediately identified as stolen.

The break-in is believed to have occurred over the weekend or early Monday morning.
