Antigua and Barbuda is in mourning following the devastating news that nine-year-old Chantel Crump, who was abducted on Wednesday afternoon, has been murdered.
The child’s body was found in an area in Weatherills after an extensive search across multiple locations. The discovery was made miles away from where she was abducted in Grays Farm.
Prime Minister Gaston Browne, who said he was at the hospital seeking care for his sick infant daughter when he received the heartbreaking update. He has sent condolences to the child’s parents, family, schoolmates, and the entire nation.
The young girl was reportedly taken just 100 feet from her home on March 12, sparking a frantic search and widespread prayers for her safe return. In a statement, the Prime Minister lamented the “senseless act of cruelty and disregard for the life of an innocent child” and stood in solidarity with the grieving family.
The Royal Police Force of Antigua and Barbuda, which has been actively investigating the case, has confirmed Chantel’s death based on evidence collected. Law enforcement officials are set to provide further details to the public in a press briefing this morning.
“The nation of Antigua and Barbuda rejects this cruel and inhumane act,” the Prime Minister affirmed. “The entire population is eager to bring the perpetrators to justice and bring peace to the family who has suffered this tragic loss.”
Director of Education Clare Browne issued a heartfelt statement, expressing his devastation over the loss of a student from Five Islands Primary School. He described Chantel as “a delicate bloom plucked too soon from this world”.
He extended his deepest sympathies to Chantel’s family, calling on the nation to pray for their strength and healing.
Browne also urged parents to remain vigilant and protect their children, reminding them to reinforce safety measures and teach their little ones to trust their instincts. He called on the community to unite against such horrors, ensuring that no other child falls victim to such brutality.
