The Antigua and Barbuda Police Force has launched a homicide investigation following the death of a prominent parliamentarian found with multiple stab wounds including a large gash to his chest in a corridor inside his home in Dry Hill. 

Commissioner of Police Atlee Rodney vowed to use every available resource to solve what he described as a “heinous crime,” against St. Peters MP, Asot Michael. Michael’s body was discovered early this morning by the politician’s maid, who immediately alerted the police. Officers arrived at the scene shortly after 8 a.m., confirming the presence of injuries that suggested foul play. 

The investigation remains in its initial stages, with forensic teams combing the scene for clues and searching for potential evidence. No signs of forced entry have been confirmed, and detectives are carefully reviewing the home to determine whether anything is missing. Police are also calling on anyone with information to come forward, particularly those who may have been in the vicinity of the home last night or early this morning.

“This is a national matter where every citizen can play a part,” said Commissioner Rodney. “We appeal to the public to respect the family’s privacy and avoid spreading unverified information. Anyone who may have seen unusual activity in the area or noticed anything suspicious is encouraged to speak with officers.”

The police will hold a case conference later today to direct their investigations going forward. Meanwhile, parliamentarians have taken to social media to express condolences on the MPs passing.

Michael’s passing will prompt a by-election in the St. Peter’s constituency, a seat he had held firmly since first being elected in 2004. A seasoned politician, Michael previously served as the Minister of Tourism, Economic Development, Investment, and Energy under Prime Minister Gaston Browne’s administration. He had a longstanding history with the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party (ABLP) before breaking away to run as an independent candidate in the 2023 general elections.

Michael is the 11th homicide victim recorded this year.
