The spirit of community was alive and well in English Harbour this week, as nearly 20 local businesses came together to donate five much-needed laptops and a desktop computer to Cobbs Cross Primary School.

A fixture of the community for over 75 years, Cobbs Cross has long been more than just a school. It’s a local landmark, a hurricane shelter, and a beacon of learning for generations of Antiguan children. While the campus has seen upgrades over time, like many schools across the island it continues to face challenges in keeping pace with the demands of digital learning.

After a recent town hall meeting and an impassioned appeal from staff and supporters, the newly formed Friends of Cobbs Cross School—established in 2024 and led by president Alan Weston—sprang into action. Rallying support from local businesses and donors, the group secured the much-needed equipment.

The donation was presented by Friends’ founders Dr. Deborah Akande, Shelly Clark, and Alan Weston, and warmly received by Principal Mrs. Mae Hypolite.

Students Kiara James, Kenesia Seaton, Kitana Smith, Corian Thomas, Terique Bartley, Jahkeema Magliore were on hand to accept the devices. “These computers will really help us,” said Kiara. Kitana noted how the new technology would help them keep up with lessons—and not slow down the teachers. Thoughtful, articulate, and full of good humour and dreams, the students spoke confidently about how the devices would support their studies… though they also admitted that Netflix, karaoke, YouTube, and a few games might sneak in too.

President Alan Weston praised the donors, saying, “The donation was made possible thanks to the generosity of nearly 20 local businesses and individuals, whose quiet kindness speaks volumes.” From cafés to car rentals, to one of Horatio Nelson’s ancestors, English Harbour has once again shown it really does take a village.

With every new device, Cobbs Cross School takes another step toward equipping its students with the tools to thrive—in school and beyond.
