Roseau Valley, Dominica – Dominica is set to welcome one of the world’s longest detachable cable cars by early next year, offering easier access to the island’s iconic natural wonders while supporting local employment and inclusivity.

The Cable Car Dominica project, spanning over six miles, will carry visitors over rainforests, river gorges, waterfalls, hot springs, and the world-famous Boiling Lake. Human Resource Manager Gary Shillingford explained that the cable car will make these natural attractions accessible to people who are physically unable to complete the challenging 6-hour hike, opening up experiences that were previously out of reach for vulnerable groups.

“On the cable car within 20 minutes to half an hour you can get to see the twin Trafalgar Falls, the Breakfast River Gorge, Valley of Desolation, the world’s largest Boiling Lake and some of the best oceanic rainforests there is in the world,” Shillingford explained.

The cable car will run directly from the base station to the top, where visitors can enjoy a kiosk area, refreshments, and short trails that bring them closer to nature. 

The initiative has also had a significant social and economic impact. Over 90% of the workforce is local, with many employees trained in technical skills such as lift operations, engineering, and electrical work. The project has created jobs for over 360 people, boosting the local economy in the Roseau Valley and surrounding communities.

Importantly, gender equality has been a key focus. Women serve as engineers, heavy equipment operators, lift operators, accountants, and medical staff, ensuring equal opportunities across roles traditionally dominated by men.

The project connects directly to several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs):

• SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth): by providing skilled employment opportunities and boosting local incomes.
  
• SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities): by offering access to natural attractions for people with mobility challenges.
  
• SDG 5 (Gender Equality): by ensuring women hold leadership, technical, and operational positions.
  
• SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities): by promoting inclusive tourism that benefits local communities.

Expected to be completed by February or March 2026, Cable Car Dominica is being described as a landmark attraction that will reshape the visitor experience.
