Steadman Scotland, popularly known as “Scotty,” is set to appear before the court on Monday, March 10, after being charged following a controversial encounter with law enforcement.

Police initially charged Scotland with battery and resisting arrest. However, according to a latest news report by state media, the police have laid a total of six charges against the elderly man. Scotland was charged for the first time on Friday, March 7 with Disorderly Conduct, Resisting Arrest, Battery on Police, Failing to Give Name, Failing to Comply with Lawful Direction and Threatening Language. He is currently on station bail and is due in court tomorrow.

Scotland’s arrest, which took place outside a barber shop in St John’s, was recorded on a cellphone and quickly spread online, triggering public concerns over the conduct of the officers involved. The footage shows two officers—one of them in plain clothes—forcefully removing Scotland from the establishment. Reports indicate that the incident stemmed from an alleged traffic violation last weekend.

Scotland, an 82-year-old community member and former driver for the U.S. Embassy spoke out about the incident. He claims a routine haircut escalated into a violent confrontation with police. The alleged use of force has raised concerns, especially given Scotland’s recent medical history, having recently undergone brain surgery.

The Royal Police Force of Antigua and Barbuda has since confirmed that its Office of Professional Standards has launched a formal review into the matter following public outcry over footage of the arrest.
