A fatal accident during Monday’s Labour Day celebrations has left a woman dead after she was crushed by a truck near Fort James Beach.

The victim, said to be in her 40s, reportedly fell while attempting to board a truck carrying supporters of the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party (ABLP) following the annual Labour Day parade in St. John’s. The incident occurred around 4 p.m., just as celebrants were making their way to the beach for the traditional post-parade festivities.

According to eyewitnesses, the woman sustained severe injuries to her upper body and was pronounced dead at the scene.

In a statement issued late Monday evening, ABLP Chairman Hon. E.P. Chet Greene expressed the party’s deep sorrow over the fatal incident. “Tragically, this incident has resulted in the death of an individual, whose identity is being withheld at this time until family members have been notified,” the statement read. Greene said the party stands ready to offer support to the victim’s loved ones and urged the public to prioritise safety during mass gatherings.

The Royal Police Force of Antigua and Barbuda is investigating the circumstances surrounding the accident and is appealing to anyone with information to come forward.

Acting Prime Minister and Minister for Labour and Public Safety, Sir Steadroy Benjamin, also issued a statement expressing condolences on behalf of the government and people of Antigua and Barbuda. He described the accident as a “deeply saddening” turn of events on a day meant to celebrate the contributions of the nation’s workers.

“Let us remain vigilant, look out for one another, and conduct our celebrations in a responsible and peaceful manner,” he urged.

The Labour Day parade is an annual tradition in Antigua and Barbuda, celebrating the achievements of workers and trade unions, and often draws thousands of participants and supporters.
