The woman accused of murdering nine-year-old Chantel Crump is being held in strict isolation at His Majesty’s Prison (HMP) as authorities take heightened security measures to ensure her safety and that of prison staff.

Angela Mejia, 20, was remanded following her first court appearance at St John’s Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday. Prison superintendent Lieutenant Colonel Trevor Pennyfeather confirmed that Mejia is being housed in the female quarters but remains segregated from the general population. While he did not disclose specific details, Pennyfeather emphasized that additional precautions have been implemented, including measures to protect prison officers assigned to her supervision.

On Monday, Mejia was transported to court under heavy police presence, with authorities making security adjustments amid widespread public outrage including calls to reinstate teh death penalty. Concerns over her safety extended beyond the courtroom, as police cordoned off areas surrounding the High Street courthouse and erected roadblocks at key intersections to prevent potential disruptions.

During her brief appearance before Magistrate Ngaio Emanuel, Mejia indicated that she is currently without legal representation but plans to seek counsel. Her committal hearing is set for June 4, when the court will determine whether sufficient evidence exists for the case to proceed to trial.

For now, Mejia remains under tight security, with prison officials closely monitoring her confinement to mitigate any risks associated with her incarceration.
