A persistent trough over the Leeward Islands is driving continued periods of heavy showers and thunderstorms, prompting weather officials to warn of minor flooding across Antigua, Montserrat, and St. Kitts and Nevis.

According to the Antigua and Barbuda Meteorological Services, up to an inch of rain has already fallen in some areas over the past three hours, and another inch or more is expected within the next 12 hours. The ongoing downpours are likely to cause flooding in low-lying and flood-prone areas throughout the day.

As a result, a flash flood advisory remains in effect until 4 p.m. today, Tuesday, May 6.

Forecasters stress that while the flooding is not expected to be life-threatening, residents should expect disruptions, especially in areas with poor drainage. Overflowing streams, creeks, and roadside drains may lead to minor property damage and dangerous driving conditions.

“Just one foot of flowing water can sweep vehicles off the road,” the advisory warned, urging drivers and pedestrians to avoid flooded areas and move to higher ground if necessary. “When in doubt, turn around — don’t drown.”
