St. John’s, Antigua – Newly elected Member of Parliament for St. Peter, Rawdon Turner, has assumed a pivotal role in the Gaston Browne-led administration as the first-ever Minister of Social and Urban Transformation. Turner was sworn in Wednesday morning, mere hours after securing a decisive victory in the St. Peter constituency, where he garnered 73 percent of the votes. He will also retain his position as Chairman of National Housing.
During the swearing-in ceremony, Prime Minister Gaston Browne congratulated Turner on his victory, describing it as “resounding” and indicative of the confidence and trust the people of St. Peter have in him.
The Ministry of Social and Urban Transformation was established to enhance social programs and urban renewal efforts. Browne highlighted the importance of the new portfolio, stating it aims to “scale up support for the most vulnerable within society” and to implement initiatives that promote a cleaner and more aesthetically pleasing environment.
Turner will oversee efforts to revitalize urban areas, address issues such as indiscriminate vending, and ensure the beautification of St. John’s and other communities. Among the immediate priorities are the development of the Tanner Street facility and a purpose-built vending space at the “Bend Down” area.
Browne underscored Turner’s qualifications for the role, noting his achievements as one of Antigua’s most successful builders and architects. Turner’s expertise in construction and design, the Prime Minister said, would be instrumental in the government’s efforts to modernize and beautify urban spaces.
In his dual capacity as Minister and Chairman of National Housing, Turner is expected to leverage the synergies between the two roles to build more homes for vulnerable populations. His portfolio will also involve collaboration with the Ministry of Public Works and the Ministry of Legal Affairs to address derelict properties and environmental blight.
At 41 years old, Turner is one of the youngest ministers in the administration.
