Schools to be closed on election day

The Ministry of Education and Sports has ordered the closure of all public schools on Wednesday 18 January, 2023.

The measure was taken to prevent any disruption during the day since a number of schools will be used as polling stations on election day and several teachers are likely to be election workers.

Clare Browne, the Director of Education said the step was also taken to shield students from any exposure that may put them in the way of harm.

“We have very little control over who is coming on to the compound,” he said, noting that the ministry would have no control over security.

The release was issued on Wednesday 4, January in response to any concerns by parents about their children’s safety and to allow them to plan for the day off.

This is not the first time that schools will be closed during election day. The same was done in 2018.
