The government has announced that the by-election for St. Peter constituency will take place on January 14, 2025, mere hours after the burial of its former Member of Parliament (MP), Asot Michael.

According to a statement issued by the Office of the Prime Minister, Prime Minister Gaston Browne has written to the Governor General to formally request that the vacancy be filled. The Writ of Election is set to be issued on Monday, December 23, 2024, with nomination day scheduled for December 31, 2024.

The seat for St. Peter became vacant on November 5, 2024, following the passing of the independent MP.

While none of the major political parties have announced their candidates, it is anticipated that Rawdon Turner, the Labour Party caretaker for the constituency, will represent his party. Turner previously contested the seat against Michael in 2023. The opposition United Progressive Party (UPP) has yet to reveal their candidate. They were expected to announce new candidates in October but failed to do so. In the 2023 elections, Trevaughn “Peter Redz” Harriette ran on the UPP ticket, but there is no indication that he will seek election again.

Chaneil Imhoff, who represented the Democratic National Alliance (DNA) in 2023, has since joined the Labour Party.
