St. John’s, Antigua– A one-year-old girl has died after reportedly falling into a cistern at her home in New Winthorpes on Wednesday.

Police say the toddler and her mother were at home when the tragic incident occurred. According to reports, the child fell into the cistern, which is located near the porch of the house.

The mother told police she began searching frantically when she couldn’t find her daughter. Moments later, she discovered the child in shallow water inside the cistern.

The child was rushed to the hospital shortly after midday but was pronounced dead on arrival.
