National cyclist Andre Simon, aged 36, died on Thursday morning, more than a year after being struck down by a motorist. Medical professionals found him unresponsive at the Care Home where he was being attended to just weeks after leaving a hospital in Texas, USA.

Simon, a dedicated athlete and father of one, had been fighting for his life since the incident occurred on Mother’s Day of 2022.

The incident took place when he and three fellow cyclists, Sean Weathered, Ghere Coates, and Tiziano Rosignoli, embarked on a leisurely bike ride on Mother’s Day. As they pedaled along the road, their journey was abruptly interrupted by a motorist named Kenyatta Benjamin. Benjamin struck each cyclist but it was Simon who bore the brunt of the impact, as he was thrown to the ground, unresponsive and grievously injured.

Following the incident, he underwent multiple surgeries in the United States, where medical professionals fought tirelessly to keep him alive. For over a year, Simon’s resilience and determination served as an inspiration to all who knew his story. But despite the unwavering efforts of medical professionals and the love and support of his family and friends, his health deteriorated, leading to his passing on Thursday morning.
